Realiza el siguiente procedimiento:

1. Abre Inicio, Ejecutar y escribe (sin comillas): "net stop wuauserv". Pulsa Aceptar.
2. Accede a X:\Windows ("X" es la letra de la unidad donde está instalado XP).
3. Renombra la carpeta SoftwareDistribution a "SoftwareDistribution_antiguo", por ejemplo.
4. Abre Inicio, Ejecutar y escribe (sin comillas): "net start wuauserv".

Hecho esto Windows creará una nueva carpeta SoftwareDistribution, intenta de nuevo el acceso a Windows Update para ver si ya funciona correctamente.

Nota: Si aparece un mensaje referente a que la carpeta está en uso o protegida contra escritura, debes probar a renombrarla tras reiniciar el sistema o en Modo seguro (pulsa F8 antes de que aparezca la pantalla de carga de XP y selecciona dicha opción en el menú).

Gracias Daniel, pero sigue diciendo exactamente lo mismo, después de
ejecutar todas tus instrucciones.
Tengo 23 actualizaciones disponibles y sigue haciewndo lo mismo . Error

Busca en tu disco duro un archivo llamado WindowsUpdate.log y postea
aquí las líneas correspondiente a la fecha en que te da ese error (no lo
postees entero que suele ser bastante largo).
