lsass.exe error message

My husband and I own two "twin" Inves computers (Pentium
IV @ 1500) purchased at El Corte Ingles in Madrid, both
running Windows XP Home. When configuring a wireless peer-
to-peer network, the second computer went into a loop
giving the error message "lsass.exe" and indicating that
the computer is seeking a password that is incorrect. It
will not boot in safe mode and it will not boot even if I
choose to reinstall the last configuration that worked.
From what I have seen on the Microsoft webpage and in
many forums, this is a common malfunction of XP and the
only solution offered is to reformat the hard disk with
the shadow disk provided with the computer. If this is
indeed the case, I obviously want to get all of my files
off of that hard disk before reformatting. I assumed that
it would be simple to take out the hard disk, configure
it as a slave, connect it to the other "twin" computer
and burn the files I want to save onto a CD. But I have
been told that the hard disk running XP will not allow
itself to be configured as a slave and that if I do this,
the two XP hard disks will both seek to be the master and
will disconfigure each other. Is this true or is this an
urban myth??? Please provide me with a solution for this
problem. Thank you so much in advance for any help you
can provide.
