64-bit Windows wide open to viruses

Users of the latest 64-bit version of Microsoft's Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition operating system will not have the option to
install Norton or McAfee antivirus software, vnunet.com can reveal.
Users trying to install the Norton Internet Security 2005 security
suite for consumers on the 64-bit version of Windows see an error
message stating that the product can not be installed.

They are referred to a web page which states: "Symantec currently does
not sell any consumer products that are certified to be compatible
with 64-bit processors and operating systems."

| Actually the x64 version of Windows XP Professional is priced the same
as
| the x86 version.
| Also as an OEM product and the fact that a lot of OEMs are switching to
| supplying x64 based systems and they will come preinstalled with Windows
XP
| Professional x64 Edition this OS will be mainstream and not just a
corporate
| product.

Really ?

That hasn't been the information thus far. Including the cost of the
platform to support
WinXP/64 and Win2003 Server/64.

You are getting confused between the x64 64-bit CPUs and the Itanium 64-bit
CPUs.
This thread is about x64 which is priced about the same as the 32-bit ones
(see my other reply)

The $ cost.

|
| It's the same price as XP Pro...

What about the cost of the platform that supports it ?

What about it? I'd bet that your average gamer spends more on the
hardware then many offices spend even on their most expensive
workstations, other then some programming shops and graphic arts.

When you're spending $1200-$2000 on the hardware, what's another $200
for the OEM license?

After giving up Norton, Panda and McAfee I have downloaded the FREE version
of avast! v4.6 and it works well on my XP Pro x64 Evaluation copy.
See it for yourself!
