Views always defaults to "Large Icons"..help!!

I have always used the "Details" option in Folder Views, but suddenly

time I close a folder and re-open it, it reverts to the "Large Icons"

and the Desktop icons default to the standard layout which I normally have
arranged differently. I have changed the settings time and again in the
Folder Options and Display sections but to no avail. A message has been
appearing sometimes about not finding "resource.dll", but I don't know if
this is related. (If it is where can I find it??) Can anyone help - would
be much appreciated.
