W32.Swen.A@mm

My Norton System Works recently detected W32,Swen,A@mm by Virus Scanner &
Auto-Protect. It automatically quarantined the following files and placed
them in "Backup Items" after deletion from my computer:

akgwl.exe
akgwlzj.exe
bupma.exe
bupmaad.exe
cgk.exe
cgkcn.exe
dhhz.exe
dhhzws.exe
fgnqaatb.exe
fwkiwkzm.pif
gqtwo.exe
Patch85.exe

They were all temporary internet files.

I was directed to Symantec's web site to access the Removal Tool for this
virus and proceeded to download this tool, saving it as FixSwen.cmd (as
suggested) on my desktop.

It was also recommended that System Restore be disabled so the worm wont be
accidentally restored at a later date, etc. If I do this I presume I will
lose all previous Restore Points. I would prefer to keep these Restore
Points if possible. Is it really necessary to disable System Restore?

On doing a further virus scan there appears to be no infected files. Do I
need to actually run the Removal Tool or has everything already been fixed?

I've never been infected with a virus before, so I'm not absolutely sure
what needs to be done. Hoping someone can help me...

My Operating System is Windows XP Home.

Hi,

Found means "Not Infected" as the virus could not run because it is found
before it runs.
In that case, your machine is not infected by that virus basically.

1. Update the definition file of your Norton Anti-Virus.
2. Scan the whole file on your machine.
3. If no virus is found, you do not need to use Removal-Tools. If found, use
the tool, and restart the procedure from #1.

Sorry dude, you won't get much support here as it is a french discussion
group. About the problem: I am having the same prob with my mailbox(for the
ISP, it uses netscape webmail, a shit which has no spam controller). Yes,
you should use the fix tool to be sure that the virus is not on your
computer but the problem most probably comes from your mailbox. A lot of
people are receiving this, I receive about 50 emails with patches corrupted
with viruses from Microsoft, Microsoft says that it doesn't send patches by
email, I'm not so sure as the worst hackers work there. So, use the spam
control of your mailbox to prevent any future patches full of Swen.
